The National Library of Scotland building on George IV Bridge

Library closing for essential maintenance

The National Library of Scotland is closing to the public from 5pm Friday 4 April for essential maintenance work. The Library is closing all its buildings – George IV Bridge and Causewayside in Edinburgh and the Library at Kelvin Hall in Glasgow. This means there will be no access to reading rooms, exhibitions, the café and shop.

The main Library website, www.nls.uk, will be online, but some digital services accessed through the site will be temporarily unavailable.

People will not be able to:

  • order items for consultation at the reading rooms, though you can still search the catalogue
  • view collections on the digital gallery
  • access eResources
  • visit the maps website, or digital collections at digital.nls.uk
  • access the Moving Image Archive

People will be able to:

  • visit us at www.nls.uk to find out what’s on, book an event, read an article
  • search the main catalogue
  • visit the online shop
  • use georeferenced viewers for consulting maps via this temporary web address

For a detailed breakdown of what will be available online, visit the information page on our website.

It is expected that the Library will resume online services on Monday 7 April, and reopen buildings on Tuesday 8 April. While we’re confident reopening will go ahead as planned, people are advised not to pre-order material for consultation for that week just in case there are delays.

We’ll provide updates on our social media channels, as well as this page. Thank you for bearing with us during this time.
