Treasures of the National Library of Scotland exhibition

2021 marked the 275th anniversary of the Battle of Culloden. The Lyon in Mourning is an account of the rising compiled by Reverend Robert Forbes (1708-1775). Some scraps enclosed are from garments supposedly worn by Prince Charles Edward Stuart to disguise him as a maid of Flora MacDonald (1722-1790), the Jacobite heroine who aided his escape. Captain Felix O’Neil, an officer attending Prince Charles, described the Battle of Culloden and the flight of the Prince on playing cards. Credit: Neil Hanna
